BoSox aim to bust out once again versus slumping Angels

05/04/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jon Lester hopes for the same type of run support the
Boston Red Sox provided Clay Buchholz with on Monday as his team continues a
four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tonight at Fenway
Park.
Boston's bats came alive on Monday, slugging four home runs in a 17-8 rout.
Dustin Pedroia belted a three-run homer, Mike Lowell finished 4-for-4 with
four RBI and J.D. Drew added four hits and drove in three runs for Boston,
which was swept in a three-game series at Baltimore over the weekend.
"To get nice contributions from a few guys is really good," Lowell said.
"Hopefully this will be a nice step to get into that groove. We feel we have
the capability. We're not going to bang out 20 hits every night, but I think
the ability is there to be an offensive team."
Adrian Beltre and Bill Hall also blasted two-run homers and Kevin Youkilis
added a solo shot as part of a 20-hit attack for Boston in the opener of a 10-
game homestand.
Buchholz (3-2) was charged with eight hits and four runs allowed over 5 2/3
frames to earn the win.
Angels lefty Joe Saunders (1-5) was pounded for nine hits and seven runs over
four-plus frames and lost his third consecutive start. Matt Palmer and Brian
Stokes weren't much better in relief, as the duo combined to allow 11 hits and
10 runs in four innings.
Ryan Budde, Maicer Izturis and Howie Kendrick each drove in two runs for Los
Angeles, which fell to 0-4 on its current 10-game road trip. The Angels kicked
their trek off by getting swept by the Detroit Tigers over the weekend and
haven't lost five in a row since April 12-18, 2007.
"This wasn't pretty tonight," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after Monday's
loss. "They came out and they kicked our butts. Some guys on our team are
going to have to get into the game and make some adjustments. We're confident
they will. Needless to say, we keep hoping for steps in the right direction
with some things, but this is not one of them."
After a slow start, Lester seems to be coming around and enters tonight's tilt
riding a 12 2/3 scoreless innings streak. He picked up his first win of
the year Wednesday in Toronto, where Lester allowed just one hit over seven
scoreless innings. He also fanned 11 and walked two to improve to 1-2 on the
season while lowering his earned run average to 4.71.
Lester is 1-1 with a 7.78 ERA in four starts versus the Angels.
Los Angeles will counter with right-hander Ervin Santana, who is 1-2 with a
4.59 ERA. Santana did not get a decision Wednesday against Cleveland, as he
surrendered three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 4-3 win.
Santana has faced the BoSox six times and is 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA in those
outings. He has been horrendous at Fenway, where he is 0-2 in four starts and
has allowed 20 hits and 17 runs (15 earned) in 21 1/3 innings.
On the milestone watch, Angels outfielder Hideki Matsui is one RBI from 1,500
for his professional career. Of course, his first 889 runs driven in were in
Japan.
The Angels won five of their nine regular season meetings with the Red Sox
last season before sweeping them in three game during the American League
Division Series.
